All of my Hair Secrets

Hey everyone! So, I always get questions about my hair. How I curl it, how often I have to wash it, what products I use, etc. I haven’t done an update on the products, tools, and practices I use, so I thought I would share what I’m currently doing.

How often do I wash my hair?

If you are a person who washes your hair religiously every day, or if you are a boy, you are going to no doubt think this is gross haha. But, I wash my hair 1-2 times a week. I have done this for as long as I can remember. When you have a ton of hair, the blow drying process is basically a lifetime. Also, my scalp has never produced a lot of oil (thankful for that). Before dry shampoo was a thing, I maybe had to (or should have) washed my hair more, but with dry shampoo, on the 3rd through *sometimes* the fifth day, I use that as well as root plumper stuff to help out! Anyway, if you are someone who washes their hair every day, you should really start slowly washing it less (or at least not using shampoo as often because it strips your hair). That is my two cents, for what it’s worth!

What products do I use?

For the last year or so I have been using MoroccanOil shampoo and conditioner and it’s been great! I love the smell, it’s not crazy expensive and my hair reacts well to it. But I am almost out of my current shampoo and I think I am going to buy the Alterna Caviar moisture duo. I have heard great things about this. Also, one of my most trusted sources, Emily Gemma from uses this and her hair is beautiful! Apart from shampoo and conditioner, I will use a hair mask maybe twice a month (depending on how my hair feels and acts, maybe more) in place of conditioner. When I get out of the shower, I use the It’s a 10 spray and I can tell you right now, if the apocalypse happened, I’d have to go buy 10 bottles of this stuff because I refuse to even attempt to brush my hair without spraying this first haha. Also, I use Batiste dry shampoo, Davines Oi oil and Big Sexy Hair powder play volumizer – this stuff is amazing AND it’s on sale right now!

What tools do I swear by?

I wish I could say that I try not to use too many hot tools on my hair and I take great and wonderful care of it, but that’d be a lie. So, first off, I have a Chi blow dryer that I bought a few years ago on sale. Up until this dryer, I’d always used a Walmart brand one. Which are great, don’t get me wrong, but I wanted to get one that would be a little better for my hair. This one has less heat and is just better for your hair. *Honestly, idk that is just what I read somewhere, probably like Wikipedia or Cosmo. I really just tornado dry it almost all the way then let it air dry the rest of the way. Finally, I brush it using a Wet Brush (holy grail).

Then, I have the Beachwaver 1.25 that I use as my curling iron. You guys, I won’t ever use a curling iron again where I have to actually twist my arm, (the horror?!) I literally clip in the end of my hair, push the correct arrow and the BARREL SPINS ITSELF. I know, sounds lazy, but the convenience is next level haha. Before this, I used a wand, but saw that this was used for the Victoria’s Secret models and I mean…if the shoe fits? Lol jk. But, as far as “tools” go, that is really all I use. Pretty simple!

What is my routine?

Brush your hair BEFORE getting in the shower. Can’t say this enough. My hairdresser says to put shampoo in your hair when it’s sopping wet for best results. And conditioner in when it’s a little dryer/not slicked down to your head. I put my hair up in a towel (nothing fancy about that but whatevs) for about 10-15 minutes then I use It’s a 10. I use about 200 sprays of this each time (lol) and gently brush through my hair. Now, I’m not tender headed whatsoever, but I also don’t like ripping all my hair out haha. And there isn’t an amount of this stuff that has ever been “too much” in my opinion so the more the merrier.

Then I let my hair air dry for as long as possible, which I really recommend! Next, I’ll add the Davines Oi all over and blow-dry using a brush occasionally to keep it tame. Usually, this is right before I go to bed, so I don’t blow dry it all the way. I leave it damp, wrap it up with a scrunchie, put it on top of my head and go to sleep.

The next morning, I use my wet brush and blow dry it a little more because it’s it still damp/cold. Then I will put half my hair on top of my head, part it down the middle and use my curling iron to curl each section. Taking the other half down when ready and doing the same. Since it’s so clean at this point, I’ll usually just add a little hairspray and let it do its thing.

At night, I twist it into a bun with a scrunchie, put it on top of my head and sleep soundly. A lot of times I can wake up, take it down and be ready to go. Sleeping with it tied up helps the curls last and it won’t get oily as quickly! Day 2-4, depending on the weather, my schedule, etc. is when I use dry shampoo and the volumizer as needed! You know your hair best, so just use these products where you feel necessary!

Really, that is all. I honestly was just kind of blessed with long, strong hair. I have no real secret tips to share with anyone other than the normal process of it all! Hope this helps anyone looking for new tools, tips or tricks and let me know if you have any questions!

How I Curl My Hair: Video

Hey, everyone!

I have been working on this video of me curling my hair for quite some time. It is FINALLY done and wanted to share it right away. My apologies if it is not great, this is my first time editing a video!

Anyway, I filmed this when I was at home over Christmas break in Mom and Dad’s new bathroom because it’s so nice and clean and pretty. But, please ignore Junie and Lulu in the background walking around being distractions. I tried to shut them out but they weren’t having it haha.

A few things I wanted to mention that you may miss while watching this video or things I forgot:

  1. See how I hold the end pieces of my hair and slowly let even the very end go around the barrel? That is how I get the ends curled using my wand which is a must for me!
  2. If you have very soft, untextured hair, start by spraying some dry shampoo or texturizing spray so your hair will hold a curl better.
  3. If you haven’t used a wand before, you should probably wear a glove because you WILL burn yourself. Several times.
  4. I like to hair spray the layers after I am done and I have shaken them out a little. The reason I didn’t here is because I ran out of hair spray 🙈.
  5. You see me mess up on a few pieces and either re-do the whole piece or just work on the end only. Don’t get discouraged if you mess up a few pieces, they will blend in when you’re done!
  6. I actually recently got a new curling iron (linked below) the BeachWaver S1.25 after I hurt my wrist because the barrel spins with a button! I am planning on doing a video of me using it soon!
  7. Sorry for the weird faces I make haha. And if it looks like I am talking to myself, it is because I am singing to the music that was playing in the background. Don’t judge!

Let me know if you have any questions and if you want to see more videos like this one! And if you want to know about my hair care routine and tips, you can read the full post here!

Best Purchases of 2016!

Hello hello! Today I am sharing some of my very favorite purchases from 2016. These are random things that I feel like I really got a lot of use out of or I have found myself using over and over again. Some of them are very obvious while others are kind of small, but important nonetheless. These are in NO particular order, so I apologize for the randomness!

Here we go…

Sam Edelman Blake Booties – I am so obsessed with these bad boys. They are comfortable as all get out, a beautiful color and they didn’t break the bank. Still really considering getting them in black.

Lulu Lemon leggings – WISH I HAD PICS IN THESE (I will soon) but finally splurged and bought a pair of lulu leggings back this spring and let me tell you what…I FELL IN LOVE!!! While shopping, I really wanted a pair with a mesh cutout and some that weren’t too long (short girl probs) and found these and seriously wore them every day when I got them. Then, this winter I wanted another pair, so I got everyone’s favorites, the Align Pant II. The inseam is short and they are insanely soft. These have the “naked” feel, while my first pair have the “hugged” feel. Love them both equally and I can honestly say that was a good use of my money! Moral of this, if you are considering it or you wear leggings a lot (work out or not) you will not regret this purchase.

My king size bed 😍 – I decided this year that I wanted a king size bed. I am all of 5 foot 3 inches, so I didn’t really NEED a king size bed, but I have wanted one for the longest time, so I decided to really start researching and figure out what I wanted. After a few months of reading, looking and reading again. I came to the decision and bought my dream bed! You can read that post linked above to find out all you ever wanted to know about this purchase and more.

Heated Microplush Blanket – I got one of these last winter in like January and got another one (leopard of course) right before winter started again and I am obsessed with them both. Also, Mom got me a heated blanket for my car for Christmas 😂.

Zella Live in Leggings – Are you starting to see a trend? Yes, I love leggings. I wear them to work every once in a while, but really I just wear them to run errands and when I am hanging around the house. These are really thick and comfortable. I have the regular ones, but am dying to get the high rise ones soon!

Madewell Transport Bag – Shoutout to Alex Bodishbaugh on this one. She has this purse and I seriously fell in love with it. Seems like it can carry tons of stuff, is a good quality basic and goes with everything. Because I am going to Europe next month (HOLY CRAP NEXT MONTH?!) I wanted to a good leather crossbody bag to hold all my belongings and still look cute! Still waiting on this bad boy to arrive but I will share pics as soon as it does! Also, for reference, I bought mine straight from Madewell (when it was discounted) and added my initials in gold foil stamp.

Minnetonka Slippers – I have raved about these before too, but it’s because they are so great for the price! I find myself wearing them almost every day now. Definitely worth the buy!

Vans Slip-ons – If you have seen pics of me before, you have probably seen these Vans. A few bloggers that I follow (@alexis.belbel and @samanthabelbel) shared these last fall and when I saw them at Nordstrom, I had to have them. They are so comfy and go with everything. Definitely a smart buy! These are true to size.

Adidas Originals sneakers – When everyone started wearing these, I told myself they were too old school for me. But then Razorback Football season came around and I wanted new cool sneakers to wear with an outfit. So I gave in. And I am glad I did. They are so comfy and although pretty basic since everyone has them now, I love them! Heads up, I went a full size down in these if you are thinking about buying your own!

Madewell Whisper V Neck Tee – I’ve said it before and I will say it again. I LOVE THESE TEES. I have white, grey and black and literally just rotate through them all the time. If you are looking for some good basic tees, I found your next love! I have a medium in mine and they fit perfect. I wanted them a little oversized, probably could have done a small.

Suede Moto Jacket – I have two of these now. One from XXI early in the season and I really love it, then a Lush brand one from Savoir Faire went on sale around Black Friday and I couldn’t say no. I wear both of these over and over again and get so many compliments every time I do. Neither jacket is available anymore, but the one linked is very similar!

BlankNYC Leather Jacket – Love this bad boy. It is warm, stylish and such great quality and I only paid $60 for it – HURRY! It’s still on sale for now!! My sleeves are a bit long, so if you are between sizes, I would go down a size!

Can’t Forget the 2016 Beauty Products…

MoroccanOil Shampoo & Conditioner – This. Is. My. Jam. Go read this post if you want to read my opinions on nicer shampoo and conditioner, because I went pretty in depth there. Before last year, I had tried other brands like Living Proof and Davines, but MoroccanOil is 100% my favorite! I am planning on doing a giveaway soon to one of my email subscribers for new shampoo and conditioner! Be sure to subscribe!

Laura Mercier Translucent Powder – Very good chance you have heard of this by now. It’s amazing, that is all.

Rodan & Fields Lash Boost – I have several friends who sell R+F and I have never used any of the products until now and LET ME TELL YOU WHAT!!!! This is the REAL deal. I am planning on doing a full post soon about the results, but I started using it the week after Thanksgiving and have really only missed a few days, so I am on my 5th week and my lashes are SO strong, darker, longer and look awesome already! If you have tried other things for your lashes but you are wanting to see real results, I promise this is the answer. I tried all the cheap options before trying this and I can honestly say I am so happy! Go read the FAQ about Lash Boost here, or go here to read the Lash Boost info!

There are so many other things in 2016 that I bought and love so much, but this is the list of things that stand out the most! Hope you guys like it and I will be back tomorrow with another post. Also, for those of you who got here from Facebook, something is going on with my Facebook connection from WordPress that I am trying to figure out, should be worked out soon!

My Hair Care Routine & Tips

Hey everyone! If you have been waiting for me to share what products and tools I use for my hair, it is your lucky day! Hope this helps and I am sorry it is so long.

  1. Brush your hair before you wash it. This helps me so much! Everyone hates getting out of the shower and having to yank at your hair for 20 minutes brushing it out. I have found that if you brush through it really good before getting in the shower, it is much easier to brush out afterward. And since your hair is a lot more breakable when it is wet, you should try and be as careful as possible.
  2. Shampoo & Conditioner – MoroccanOil is my personal fave for about the last 8 months. It smells so good, and keeps my hair as healthy as possible! My advice on shampoo and conditioner is that if you are wanting your hair to get thicker, fuller, have more volume, grow longer or anything else, invest in good shampoo and conditioner. You won’t see overnight results obviously but it does help SO much. I constantly hear people complain about their hair and they use drugstore products which are great and I used them for YEARS, but now I spend a little more money because it is important to me. When I started using nicer shampoo, I could for SURE tell! I use heat on my hair all the time and don’t get a haircut for up to a year. When I went in recently, I still hardly had any dead or split ends and that was not the case before I started using good stuff! Anyway, I will harp on this a lot, but I hope you get the picture! Everytime I buy new shampoo or conditioner, I get a different kind, but I like the repair or volume shampoo with the volume or smoothing conditioner. Just kind of depends on your hair!
  3. It’s a 10 Miracle Leave in Product. I could write a novel about this stuff. It may seem pricey but I can’t survive one hair wash without it now. I buy the big one at Sam’s Club now. After I get out of the shower, I put my hair in a towel on top of my head (because duh) for maybe 10 minutes. Then before brushing it, I spray this stuff all in my hair and kind of let it soak in. Then I separate my hair with half on each side and use my Wet Brush to comb through it and it is SO easy! Seriously, I love this stuff more than I love anything else!
  4. Davines Oi Oil. I have had this stuff for about 3 years now (bought it because I thought I was going bald on my left side haha) and I use it very sparingly. 1-2 squirts goes through my ends and the area right around my face when my hair is wet. Then if my hair feels dry after blow drying it, I will add a LITTLE bit more.
  5. AIR DRY as much as you can! Seriously if you have time to do anything else while your hair is wet. Do it. I usually try to let mine air dry as long as possible. I do this for a few reasons. 1. Less heat on your hair is better for it, so less blow drying time means less heat. 2. I like the texture it gives me hair when I do start to fix it. 3. I am lazy. Just being honest.
  6. Blow dry. I use a Chi dryer. Nothing too fancy. Got it on sale at Ulta last year and really like it. I shower religiously at night. Because this whole process from start to finish is too long and I am not patient enough for that. So I will shower at night and dry my hair about 75% of the way then put it up in a bun to sleep. This gives it a little more texture when I wake up. Then I dry it for another minute the next morning if it still feels wet and to get it in place and ready for curling. When I do this, my hair just curls better because it isn’t stick straight and is honestly still pretty poofy.
  7. Triple Sec 3-in-1 Dry Bar Texture Spray. You have probably noticed the amount of times I have said texture, but it is very important. I have a few things to add texture but my favorite is this spray. It smells good and it doesn’t leave my hair too gritty. My hair is actually really soft, so adding some texture helps the curls hold when my hair is clean. If you feel like your hair won’t even attempt holding a curl, try it when it’s dirty and it will work a lot better. My hair is actually really used to be curled now (believe it or not) so I don’t have a problem with the curl, more about the volume because the hair is so dang heavy.
  8. CURLING THIS HAIR. Sorry I am already on step 8, wow this is a lot. Oops. Anyway, I use the Nume Titan 3 and only use the biggest wand which is about 1.25″. I put half my hair up on top of my head and separate what is left in half and bring each side in front by my face. Then I take 1″(ish) pieces and curl them away from my face. Holding only the very very end of my hair because I like it to look curled not straight. When I let the hair go, I will hold the curl for a few seconds in my hand while is still hot until it cools down to try and help it stay curled. I do the bottom half of my head, spray with hairspray, then move on to the top half and do the exact same thing. I do want to add that I am looking into buying either the Beachwaver (what the VS models use!) or the new T3 curling iron or this one. You put the end of your hair in the little clip, press and button and the barrel rotates for you!!! I can’t think of a better way to spend my money!
  9. Shake it out. After I curl every piece and spray all of it down with flexible hold hairspray, I kind of break up the curls and toss my hair around a little to give it that “lived in” look.
  10. Finally! Wash your hair as little as possible! I wash mine about twice a week and can sometimes get away with even less (shhh!). I know everyone’s hair is different and you think you need to wash it every day, but you can train your hair to last a little longer. Use dry shampoo (Batiste is my fave) and slowly stretch out the time between your washes. Shampoo just dries your hair out, so the less you use it, the better!

One last thing (thanks Cassie for commenting and reminding me). In between washes, during a non hair wash shower, when I am sleeping or around the house and want my hair out of my face, I use a scrunchie religiously. It won’t cause as much breakage as regular ponytail holders and won’t leave a crease! Also I sleep on a satin pillowcase which helps my hair not look insanely terrible after a night of sleep!

That is all! I hope this helps at least a little bit! I still plan on doing another post with a video of me actually curling my hair, but I just haven’t had that chance yet! Let me know if you guys have any questions and thanks for reading the longest post ever!
